Chapter 8 - Stumbling over Jesus

Chapter Focus: Bottom of Page 51 to the Top of Page 54

“He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.” John 13:34-35

A few weeks back I had the great displeasure of breaking or coming close to breaking the smallest toe on my right foot. I wish there was some cool story that’s not embarrassing, but there isn’t. I was getting out of the shower and, in stride, kicked the ceramic corner of our tub. And in the famous words of Howard Cosell, “Down goes Frazier!” I dropped like a sack of potatoes. In short, my tub was a stumbling block.

Stumbling blocks and cornerstones are not in our common vernacular these days, but they would have in Jesus’ day. Practically, much of the New Testament takes place in very rocky terrain. Nearly every building and road was made of blocks of stone, not concrete or asphalt. The possibility of stumbling over a jagged bit of stone was highly possible.

What’s the point? You don’t stumble if you’re paying attention. If you’re walking down a path carefully focusing on every foot fall, the likelihood of falling is low.

God’s word is our path. It is a well-paved, smooth bit of road. There are places where we need to be aware where we’re standing for certain, but it doesn’t lead us to danger. Following God’s word will not lead us to stumble or fall, but is a firm foundation, part of God’s cornerstone for our lives.

Has there ever been a time where a Scripture brought you back to a safe place in your life?

We’re diving into some history with our links this week. First, we look at a breakdown of what it means for Jesus to be the cornerstone, followed by a historic look at what the Temple would have looked like during Jesus’ time. And finally, we have a link to Toby Mac’s song, also titled “Cornerstone.”

God, thank you for the Holy Bible and the blessing it has in our lives. Thank you for its correction that holds us to a higher standard than we do for ourselves. Thank you for its encouragement that lifts us up when we’re down. Thank you for the blessing of pointing us to Jesus Christ. We pray this all in His mighty and unending name, amen!
