Chapter 10 - Questions

Here we go! Great job staying with it. The conversations and comments have been truly wonderful. Step out of your comfort zone today and this coming week and comment on someone else’s post as well. We can all use the support and encouragement from each other. My responses to the two questions below then I’d love your thoughts!

Christian marriage is unique because it firmly bonds two people spiritually. It’s not just the physical, emotional, mental, and relational that combine two together. Because of this, the unity and strength of a Christian marriage is different from that of a non-Christian one. This doesn’t, of course, mean that non-Christian marriages can’t have good qualities. That’s absurd. But it does mean that those non-Christian marriages are missing something vital and powerful. A true trinity of relationship between the individuals and God.
In a word. No. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I certainly cannot imagine a time where I expected my wife to be “seen, not heard.” That’s insane to me. We are one. My role and responsibility in front of the Lord is to help her to become a woman of faith with such depth and courage that I and others can be in awe of what God does. Supporting my wife, encouraging her, challenging her (in a godly way), and holding her accountable to her own high standards and those set in the Bible are a great joy.

Chapter 10 - Learning to Behave

Focus: Page 67

“That a wife would convert to Christianity without her husband doing so would be scandalous. The surrounding drama would be the sort of household disruption that a Roman most frowned upon.” pg. 67

My wife Becky and I have been married for over 17 years now and I can say with extreme certainty that my faith would not be where it is today without her. She has been faithful to the Lord, which has pointed me towards God when I had strayed from his path. Becky has also challenged and held me accountable to the standards in the Bible.

Thus, when I read about the historical context Rev. Shane presents in our reading today, it feels quite foreign. My faith is faithful and respectful, no doubt, but I can’t imagine her being silent, nor would I want that. This inherently creates a contextual divide between what I know and feel versus what is described by the biblical authors.

As a modern reader and believer, it is my goal to learn and understand what the author is conveying in their historical and social context, while determining what and how the teaching can be applied in my life. Learning from 1 Peter 3:1-2, I would translate and apply this into my own home in the following way.

My wife, like many women, leads a life where her actions are more powerful than any words she might say. This is not only enticing me towards her, but enticing me towards the Holy Spirit that is within her.

Dear God, we praise you for the people who live out the Good News of Jesus Christ with their actions and not just their words. Bless and reward them with their good ministry towards others. We thank you for their positivity, resilience, and courage. Help us all to become someone whose actions speak far louder than words. Amen.

Prayer for March 12th

Heavenly Father, we pray for those who are grieving and mourning loss. Broken dreams, lost loved ones, shattered relationships, and failed opportunities all leave scars and hurt. But you are greater than that pain. You are the great healer and overcame death. Through Jesus Christ, we can be made new, taking joy in what can be. Let us never forget the past, Lord, but help us find comfort in your future. Amen.

Chapter 10 - Learning to Behave

“Peter has advised Christians that this world is not their home.” pg. 66

Dorothy from the wizard of Oz said it best, “there’s no place like home.” The question really is, “where is home?” As Christians we are certainly not at home here in this fallen world. We long for that piece of our hearts that’s left wanting, the hole that exists which can’t be fulfilled by money, relationships, or achievements. It’s a hole that can only be filled by God, and more specifically, by salvation in Jesus Christ which directs us to eternity.

Identify eternity as our home comes with some challenges. We don’t know exactly what heaven will look like, who will be there (other than God and Jesus), what we’ll do, or even where it is. Does this mean heaven doesn’t exist? Of course not!

Eternity, our true home, can be found in glimpses and shadows here on earth, because we (Creation) have been made by God. Some of the glimpses of heaven that come to mind include:

A baby’s smile.

Uplifting words of a friend.

A sunrise or sunset.

A chorus of believers in worship.

Tearful prayers.

Today, let’s think heavenward. This world is not our home, but what IN this world makes you think of eternity? List some of your favorites in the comments!

Chapter 9 - The Saved, the Suffering, and the Oppressed

Focus: Bottom of Page 64 to the Top of 65

“Through the work of the cross, Jesus took our sin, our shame, our disease, and their control over us upon himself, and all of it died with him.” pg. 64

A few weeks back my grandmother passed away. She had a long and full life, but age and failing health brought her home to Jesus. As I processed her passing, most of my thoughts turned to eternity.

We are not meant for this fallen world. God never intended for us to have sin, shame, disease, or death in the Garden of Eden. God’s intention was for us to be in complete community with him for all of eternity. The troubles of this life were never supposed to be. And thank God that it didn’t stop at that point.

The work of the cross offers a reprieve from the punishment of the fallen world. It’s the reset button to our faulty system, an opportunity for all of humanity to have access to the freedom of the Garden through Jesus.

Our links for this week provide us with some biblical context on what it means to submit to the authority of our government. We also have a link that can help us to pray for our government and our leaders.

Lately, I’ve been paying more attention to people’s unique, positive qualities. These are the things that, in the words of Rev. Shane, “we bring to the table.” For instance, an area that I strive for is positivity and optimism. God has very graciously taught me to be a positive and optimistic person at this stage of my life. And, importantly, these are traits that reflect the values of God. Jesus brings life, not death. He offers hope and an eternal sense of joy. Thus, I view these qualities I strive for as an extension of Jesus.

You know it’s coming… What are your unique qualities that God has placed in you? And remember, in the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 10:17, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” Recognizing the good things that God has done is not bragging about yourself, it’s bragging about the Holy, mighty God who made you.

Almighty God, my heart breaks for those who are lost. Guide them into the comfort and peace of your Son. Give them the strength to see the safety in obeying your commandments. Give them the courage to change course when it seems impossible to do so. We believe that you can change lives and trust you to help us. We pray this all in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you.” 1 Peter 2:15

Today, I’d like to hear from you! Most of us have felt like we were incompatible with the culture at large. A time when we felt alone and isolated in our opinions, convictions, and beliefs. Thankfully, very rarely do we end up staying in that place for long periods of time.

What I’d like for you to do is respond to this question, “what helps you to stay grounded in Jesus Christ when you are at odds with the culture?”

There are no wrong answers to this question. If it’s drinking a cup of coffee at sunrise and thanking God, excellent. If it’s reading your Bible, excellent. Crying out to the Lord? Excellent. This is a time where we can all learn from each other how to handle the stress of being in a church under fire and more importantly, ways to live honorable lives even in the face of accusations.

Chapter 9 - The Saved, the Suffering, and the Oppressed

Chapter Scriptures: 1 Peter 2:13-25

“Here is how to be a Christian within the constructs of the institutions and social structures in which you live.” pg. 59

We firmly enter what it means to be a church under fire. Peter speaks to the importance of remaining focused on Jesus Christ when up against the authority and persecution of the Roman Empire.

Rev. Shane will guide us through this difficult bit of the trail and what a blessing that is. I won’t give away any details, but instead, I will point you to one of our first scriptures and simply ask you to reflect.

For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority-whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. 1 Peter 2:13-14.

This, and other passages will shove on us, but in the end, if we hold tight, we can learn to be more like Jesus.

We’re diving into some history with our links this week. First, we look at a breakdown of what it means for Jesus to be the cornerstone, followed by a historic look at what the Temple would have looked like during Jesus’ time. Lord God, we often rebel against the authorities in our lives. We want to do things our way, on our time, and on our own terms. Help us to submit first to the authority of Jesus in our lives, and then to the rulers and authorities today as 1 Peter 2 says. I pray this all in Jesus’ name. Amen.
