Chapter 4 - Gritty Navigational Tools for Tough Times

Focus: Bottom  of Page 21 to the Top of Page 23

“God does not judge us according to our potential or intention. God judges us according to our actions.” pg.22

I am an unabashed sports fan. Not one sport in particular, but all sports. It’s not uncommon for me to watch golf, billiards, American football, hockey, Formula 1 racing, and everything in between. Regardless of the sport, I have a fascination with those who are in the top 1% of their skills. Those men and women are encouraging. We all hear about the sacrifices, training, and incredible communities it takes to support the 1%.

On the other hand, though, it saddens me to hear the stories of the “could have been.” You know those people. They “could have been excellent, if only they….” Those athletes who had everything working for them, but for some reason their natural giftings, potential, and reality didn’t intertwine.

Sadly, I have also seen many Christians who fall into the “could have been” category. They have every natural skill and great intentions, but it was never realized in their actions. These situations always break my heart, because their lack of action hurts the body of Christians.

But then I remember that we all have choices to make and we all fall short. And it’s at about that point where I get back to doing what God has called me to do. To get back to action.

Sticking on our theme of practicality this week, here are some ways you can get back in the game if you’ve been on the bench.

  • Pray: Prayer is action. Period. End of story.

  • Volunteer: Be a part of something at your church. Can you shake someone’s hand and smile? There are literally hundreds of different opportunities at churches. Don’t focus on what you can’t do, be positive about what you can.

  • Coach the Next Generation: Maybe you don’t have the same ability you once had, that’s ok. Coach. Lead. Guide. Share your experience with the person who is now in your position. The whole team will grow from you.

Today is another opportunity for repetition. Reading and re-reading the same material will help us all grow. Like any good athlete, repetition can ingrain skill.

Lord, I don’t want to be on the sidelines. I don’t want to be someone that others look at and lament over unrealized potential. I desire to become someone who others can be inspired to pursue a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. There is no greater honor than to bring you glory through our actions. I pray this all in Jesus’ name. Amen.
