Chapter 5 - Ransomed and Redeemed

Chapter Scriptures: 1 Peter 1:17-25

“It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but no in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.” 1 Peter 1:19-20

Happy Monday friends, I hope you had a wonderful weekend. As we enter a new week and chapter, I’d just like to remind you of the flow each week. Today we will do an overview, and then the following days will be taking parts and pieces from the chapter to digest in greater detail. If it suits your style, I recommend your study of the chapter to parallel.

Rev. Shane takes a dive into the deeper end of the lake on the concepts of being ransomed and redeemed. Both of these points may be difficult for us to process because they’re not something we face in day to day life. The trauma and damage being ransomed could be devastating. Not just to the person themselves, but to the family and friends of the loved one. Now imagine that the ransom has been paid for, but the trapped person won’t accept the offer.

This is part of the choice we all face. Jesus has paid the ransom for our sins with his blood. He is the perfect, sinless, spotless sacrifice that paid our debts, but we are all individually required to accept that gift. I assume since you are reading this devotion that you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, fully receiving the blessings that come, including being redeemed.

If you are willing to share below, what was it that brought you to that point of acceptance?

For me, it was the passing of a strong Christian friend, which forced me to question if I had been redeemed. At the time of his passing, the answer was definitely “no.” But that loss also began the process of changing me. I stopped running away from God and instead, sought Him out. And would you know it, God seemed to seek me out too. It wasn’t long until God surrounded me with strong Christians and guided me through his Word. Then, on my 21st birthday, I fully accepted Jesus as Lord, placing my faith and hope in Him. Redeemed? You bet.

This week's links include word studies of what it means to be ransomed and redeemed, as well as an article on why Jesus died for our sins, and finally, a classic worship song. Enjoy!

Awesome God, how majestic and glorious are you that you would redeem us by the blood of Jesus Christ. He has paid our dues, our ransom, so that we might have eternal life. We are grateful and overwhelmed by this gift and act of love. Help us all to share this Good News with everyone we know. We pray this all in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
