Chapter 5 - Ransomed and Redeemed

Focus: Page 24 to the Top of Page 28

“Theology is the touchpoint at which our faith in God and the unfolding of our human lives intersect.” pg. 26

I remember first hearing the word “theology.” It seemed like one of those big Christian words like redemption, discipleship, or sanctification. I sort of understood what it was, but I didn’t really “get it.” Then someone broke it down for me in language that made sense.

Theology, as Rev. Shane says, is a compound word for the study of God. Easy enough, but what does that look like? Truthfully, it’s not as complicated as we make it out to be. We are given the Bible, the Word of God. In the Bible we can see what pleases and displeases God, what He says, how He acts, who He supports and punishes, and even His list of rules. There is a great deal to learn about God, to study, if we simply read the Bible!

On top of the direct quotations and information from God himself in the Bible, we also have the testimony of others. One of my personal favorites are the testimonies of David in the Psalms. He sings about the might and power of God, His grace, love, forgiveness, omnipotence, and omniscience all in the Psalms. Beyond David, of course we also have Jesus, God’s son.

If you wanted to learn about me, my children would be great people to talk to. They see me on my good and bad days. They know what makes me happy and cranky, what rules I really care about, and how to bring me joy. But more than my character qualities, they know me, because they are from me. We are made of the same stuff… you might say they are made in my image (don’t get all theological here, I fully recognize that they are made in the image of God more than my own). The point is, if you are going to study God, you already have all the tools you need. You have the words, rules, and testimonies of God through the Bible and you are His son or daughter, made in His image. You bear the stamp of God on your heart.

Today, take the opportunity to study God. Turn to Genesis, Exodus, the Psalms, or the words of Jesus and learn something about our Creator God.

This week's links include word studies of what it means to be ransomed and redeemed, as well as an article on why Jesus died for our sins, and finally, a classic worship song. Enjoy!

God of all, help us to know you deeply. We desire to study your words in the Bible and to learn about your character. Guide us through your commandments and how You created us with love and purpose. Grant us wisdom to know without a doubt that we are loved by You. We love You. We thank You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
