Chapter 8 - Stumbling over Jesus
Focus: Page 49 to the Top of 51
“The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.” Psalm 118:22-23
The cornerstone of a building was the first one placed. Every other measurement and detail was made off of that one stone. This ensured that the remaining stones were in alignment and level with the cornerstone. The metaphor of Jesus being the cornerstone should not be lost on us today.
As the Church faces trials and tribulations, we need to remember our cornerstone. It is Jesus, not us, who decides what is right and true. When you consider the fires that come against you or your church how do you align yourself with Jesus Christ, our cornerstone?
Personally, I turn to scripture. It’s in the Bible where I’ve found correction, challenge, encouragement, or confirmation. I try to read the words of Jesus and study his teachings such that I can be confident I’m not acting on my own accord. This can still be a challenge, though, because it takes some dedication to reading ALL of Jesus’ teachings and not just cherry picking what I want.
We’re diving into some history with our links this week. First, we look at a breakdown of what it means for Jesus to be the cornerstone, followed by a historic look at what the Temple would have looked like during Jesus’ time. And finally, we have a link to Toby Mac’s song, also titled “Cornerstone.”

Dear God, help us to be in alignment with Jesus, our cornerstone. Give us the courage to stand with Jesus in all things and not to turn towards our own abilities or desires. Make Jesus the standard upon which we measure every other area of our lives. We pray this all in Jesus’ strong and mighty name. Amen.
